There are no particular issues or difficulties with translations between Portuguese and English, either for translations into Portuguese from English, or translations into English from Portuguese.

However there are significant differences between the written Portuguese of Portugal and Brazil, including differences in vocabulary, spelling and use of accents, grammar and style (particularly capitalization and punctuation). The differences are such that a document is immediately identifiable as being from one or the other region.

Thus European and Brazilian Portuguese are effectively considered different target languages for Portuguese translation purposes, and translators from the correct target region should always be used.

In addition to Portugal and Brazil, Portuguese is also spoken in parts of Africa - Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe. In general terms African Portuguese tends to follow European Portuguese, with some additional vocabulary differences, and in the vast majority of cases a European Portuguese translation can be used in Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Portuguese can be typeset as raw text in all major graphic design programs, and there are no particular difficulties involved in typesetting Portuguese, only occasionally space issues as Portuguese translations can often be 10-15% longer than the original English text.

Typesetting Portuguese involves the same font selection and layout considerations as apply for English artwork. If we are working with an existing English graphic design file, the same fonts can almost always be used for the Portuguese translation. However hyphenation, if used, must of course follow Portuguese and not English rules.
