There are no particular issues or difficulties with translations between Spanish and English, either for translations into Spanish from English, or translations into English from Spanish.
A common query though is whether a single Spanish translation can be used for all Spanish speaking countries. In the vast majority of cases the answer is yes.
Spanish is spoken principally in mainland Spain and its islands, throughout most of Central and South America (the main exception being Brazil, where Portuguese is used), and in North America. Whilst there is considerable variation in spoken Spanish from country to country and region to region, written Spanish is largely uniform throughout the Spanish-speaking world. However there are one or two regional differences in grammar and moderately significant vocabulary differences from country to country.
In recognition of this, translators are practiced in producing “neutral” Spanish translations, meaning the Spanish translation will employ widely used vocabulary and try to avoid country-specific usage, and so will be understood by all Spanish speakers and will not offend.
Nevertheless for certain types of texts destined for a single country only, it may be advisable to ensure the translator used is from the target region, or to review an existing “neutral” Spanish translation to ensure it conforms to local language usage.
Spanish Typesetting
Spanish can be typeset as raw text in all major graphic design programs, and there are no particular difficulties involved in typesetting Spanish, only occasionally space issues as Spanish translations can often be 15-20% longer than the original English text.
Typesetting Spanish involves the same font selection and layout considerations as apply for English artwork. If we are working with an existing English graphic design file, the same fonts can almost always be used for the Spanish translation. However hyphenation, if used, must of course follow Spanish and not English rules.
